Beets, chopped on a grater and canned for the winter, make a wonderful cold snack. In addition to the main taste of root vegetables, there are spicy notes of garlic and fried onions.

Inspect the beets for damage and rot, wash and boil until tender.

Cut the onions into half rings. Fry the onion pieces until golden brown in vegetable oil, but the main thing is not to overcook the onion.

While the onions are fried, grate the beets coarsely.

In a deep saucepan with a thick bottom and walls, combine onions and beets, add granulated sugar, salt, ground black pepper. Mix vinegar with water, pour into a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 40 minutes.

Peel the garlic, chop finely and add to the beets for 10 minutes. before the end of cooking.
